【我小学时第一看这部电影，当年感觉有些情节很奇怪，比如说河边的三个女人到底是干什么的，还有男主为什么就莫名其妙地闯进无线电站录了这首歌...直到今年才发现这故事是改编自《奥德赛》...三个女人是塞壬，无线电站的盲眼站长是荷马。
男主的名字是尤利西斯·艾弗瑞特·麦吉尔，但电影里一直被人叫做艾弗瑞特。尤利西斯是拉丁文里的奥德赛，这个名字的意思是“麻烦”（trouble）。
有趣的是，奥德赛是古希腊的英雄，但在罗马人的眼中，尤利西斯却是个恶人（因为特洛伊战争），在罗马史诗《埃涅阿斯纪》中，维吉尔用“狡诈”这个词来形容尤利西斯。而但丁的《神曲》中，尤利西斯欺骗他的下属陪他航向世界的尽头寻找不存在的“真理”。
电影开头艾弗瑞特怂恿他两个蠢狱友帮他越狱寻找他“埋在密西西比河边的宝藏”，其实根本没有宝藏，是他瞎说的。】
